On February 25, 2017, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars XX.

In the Open Section, David Sye was the undefeated 1st place winner at 3.5/4. Dean Landfair, Ryan Richardson, Bill Dwyer and Sam Henderson rounded out the top five, respectively.

In the U1650 Division, 1st place went to Paul Fritz, with Megan Chen, Richard Lewis, the tournament organizer and Adithya Kuchibhotia, finishing 2nd through 5th place.

The U1250 Division had Carl Obermeier, Layla Rodriguez, James Marchert Sr. and Avighnaw Vasudevan as the top four.
In the U800 Division, Stephen Plotnick was the winner, followed by Matthew Trapp, Nola Fletes and Betty Henderson, for 2nd through 4th place.

Then, it was time for the Grand Championship Tournament. Although we had fewer than the required players to begin this, we decided to have it anyway, as a show of appreciation to the players. The players were understanding as less than advertised Grand Champion money was awarded.

David Sye and Carl Obermeier squared off in a five-minute, no delay blitz game, while Paul Fritz and Matthew Trapp battled it out in the other semi-final, under the same rules. Trapp was fortunate to be in contention because the actual 1st place U800 winner donated his spot to Trapp. Sye and Fritz both won their berth into the finals.

Obermeier and Trapp shared 2nd Runner Up Grand Champion awards.

The last game was a 15-minute, no delay Quick Chess Game.

When the smoke had cleared, Sye was the Chess Wars XX undisputed and undefeated Grand Champion, taking home a “Monster Sized" trophy and $50.00.

Everyone seemed to have a good time and several participants had positive comments about how the tournament was organized.

Additionally, Megan Chen and Paul Fritz won “Bounty Hunter Prizes” by dissecting the tournament organizer, in the process!  Good job, lady and gent!
