Chicago Amateur Chess Tournament

The first Chicago Amateur Chess Tournament was held on September 24^th. The tournament was organized by the International Educational and Cultural Services, Inc and was hosted by the Ridge Academy, a small independent school in Beverly area of Chicago.

Chicago Amateur tournament is open for all players rated below 2200 and has three sections:

Section A – USCF 1600 – 2199

Section B – USCF 1000 – 1599

Section C – Unrated – Under 1000.

Thomas Murphy who just recently moved to Chicago from DC won a clear 1^st place at Section A. Young Timothy Zhou from Naperville finished 2nd. Dimitri Kosteris and Mathew Stevens drew at the last round and tied for the 3^rd place.

In Section B Dylan Canavan, a Hindsdale Central chess coach finished with 4 points and nice gain on his rating. Three players shared the 2-4 place: Kymantas Alborovas, Rudy Padilla and Alex Hu.

Section C had only three players and first two places are shared by Aidan Kolar and Walter Griesmeyer.

Guaranteed $500 prizes are split between three sections:

Sections A and B: $100 - $60 - $40 and Section C: $70 - $30 with additional trophy for top scholastic player in a section.

At the tournament, Ridge Academy staff sold hot dogs, drinks, and other food items. Checkmate Chess Supply company offered books and equipment on site.
