Bennett Joseph Wins Knight Moves Summer Open in Pilsen

KMCC Summer Top TableNo stranger to to the Knight Moves Chess Club and its two decades of competitions, Bennett Joseph nailed down the championship at the KMCC's Summer Open, sweeping all five rounds.

The unrated event was held June 20th at the Lozano Branch of the Chicago Public Library in Pilsen.

A four-way tie for second at 3.5/5 included Fabian Ramon, Ayodele Abejide, Malik Brewley and Mark Jungo.  Joseph defeated Ramos in the second round and Abejide in the fourth round. 

On tiebreaks, Ramos claimed second with Abejide earning third place honors. Brewley placed fourth.

Another KMCC regular, Mark Jungo took fifth on tiebreaks, winning all three of his games after missing the first two rounds due to prior obligation.

20 played at least two rounds in the Open Section.

KMCC Summer K-8 WinnersIn the 18-player K-8 competition, Vikram Oberai went undefeated with four wins and a draw, all against top ten finishers.

Lizzy Brahin and Andrey Novikov tied for second place a half point back. Lizzy claimed the second place trophy on tiebreaks, with Andrey nabbing third.

Winston Ding had the sole 3.5 score to claim fourth, losing to Vikram in the third round and drawing Jack Heller in the second round.

Jack had the top tiebreak among 3.0 scorers earning the fifth place trophy. Medals were awarded to the other 3.0 scorers including Anthony and Christian Luna along with Aditya Oberai.

There was a three-way tie for ninth place which included Layla Rodriguez, Nathan Chan and Danny Roman. 

The KMCC meets Thursday evenings at 6pm at the library, 1805 South Loomis.

The tournament was organized by Hector Hernandez, the chief librarian of the Lozano branch.
