Bradley Guan Wins DuPage County Championship

Ex-Naperville North Captain Bradley Guan returned from college in Pennsylvania to go a perfect four-for-four at the 4th Annual DuPage County Chess Championship. 27 competed in the Championship section. Altogether, 116 players faced off in six rated sections Sunday, December 27. The tournament was held at Benedictine University in Lisle.

The event was organized by Jeff DiOrio of Elite Chess... who also happened to be Bradley's Naperville North coach when they won the IHSA team championships earlier this year.

Guan finished a half point better than Akshay Indusekar and Wisconsin's Avinash Rajendra. Akshay was a member of the back-to-back University of Illinois final four teams, has now graduated, and works in Washington, DC for a major consulting firm. Akshay and Avinash drew head-to-head in the final round.

Daniel Margulis topped the Under 1600 section at 3.5, a half-point better than Peter Ren and cheesehead Shaunak Bhattacharyya. Daniel defeated Peter in the third round and closed out the tournament with a draw against Shaunak in the final round.

Under 1400 competition saw Antonio Clavero with three wins and a bye at 4.0. Alex Zhang, Charles Chen and Nathan Frommelt split second and third place prize monies with their 2.5's. Alex and Charles drew in the first round to set the tone. Clavero defeated Zhang in the final round after defeating Frommelt in the second round.

In the 21-player U1200, Micah Hill ran the table with 4.0/4, raising his rating 181 points (pending re-rate). Not to be outdone by their older siblings playing in above-mentioned sections, Anshu Indusekar and Rishav Bhattacharyya tied for second (and third place) with 3.5's.

A pair of young ladies topped the U1000's with Natalie Wisniowski and Sarah Grandy drawing head to head in the third round, both finishing with 3.5's. A trio of Zain Anwar, Sarat Sagaram and Aditya Oberai split third place honors, all with 3.0's.

29 faced off in U800 competition with two perfect scores emerging: Benjamin Myung and Siva Nalabothu. Seven players tied for third place with 3.0's.

US Chess Crosstables have been posted.

Additional players faced off in three unrated sections: CICL, Elementary School and Junior High.
