New US Chess Master Freitag Holds 18-Player Simul

On November 19, 2015, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted the Todd Frietag Master Chess Simul. Eighteen enthusiastic players were on hand to battle Illinois’ newest Master!

(Editor's Note:  Frietag eclipsed the magic Master mark tying for the championship of the 2015 Midwest Class. His rating is now 2224).

Mr. Freitag was very personable as he smiled and greeted players before the matches began. Then, he proceeded to methodically and systematically dissect his opponents one by one.

In a contest that lasted nearly 60 moves, one challenger pulled off an extremely narrow victory in a game that could have gone either way.

"Old Timer" Perfect at Glenwood Chess Wars VII

On November 7,  17 chess warriors converged at the Blakey Center in Glenwood to do battle. When the dust had cleared, “Old Timer” George David -- who had apparently been MIA in tournaments for quite some time -- was completely re-energized as he pummeled everyone in his path to take the undisputed first place with a perfect 4-0 score.
Second and third place prizes were shared by Charles Coffman and Sam Henderson with 3-0 scores. The fourth place trophy went to Doug Middleton with a 2.5 score and better tiebreaks.

Harrisons Prevail at Chess Wars VI

On October 18, the Glenwood Chess Club hosted Chess Wars VI. Unfortunately, a website error relating to registration information, seemed to seriously impede on our number of entrants!

With an eight-player field, we added an adult/open section and played a four-person quad in both divisions. USCF crosstables can be found here.

In the Scholastic Section, David Harrison (8th grade) was undefeated. (3-0) Second place went to his younger brother Christopher (5th grade) who scored 2-1. Third place was earned by visiting 4th grade Indiana “New Comer”, Bill Wei. (1-2) Finally, Matthew Brison, played with “Heart and Spirit”, but regrettably, came in 4th with a 0-3 score.
