38 Compete at DeKalb's Other Tal Memorial

Aaron Maney has been practicing his chess lately and it shows. Maney defeated experts in back-to-back rounds to earn a stake of first place at The Other Tal Memorial, held Nov. 9 in DeKalb.

Jon Winick, Vincent Do and Chelsea Harper joined Maney with 3.0/4 scores. Winick's fourth-round victory deprived Maney of a perfect score. Still, Aaron, playing in his sixth tournament this fall after a three year absence from rated play, raised his USCF rating over 100 points to 1830.

Overall, 38 players battled it out in four sections of dual time-controlled chess (with a few extra games thrown in). USCF Crosstables.

Winick, Robledo Top Northern IL Fall Classic

 

Newly-minted Class A-player Jon Winick and Expert Mark Robledo drew in the fourth and final round of the 2013 Northern Illinois Fall Classic, posting 3.5/4 scores and splitting the championship.

The dual-rated tournament was held October 19 in Lisle, attracting a field of 30 competing within three sections. Complete crosstables can be viewed here.

In the Reserve, Gama De Luna scored a perfect 4.0/4 in only his second USCF-rated tournament. In the Booster, the host Aurora Naperville Chess Club's (ANCC's) Matthias Guillet also ran the table 4.0/4 while competing in his first rated event. Matthias recently returned to chess after a multi-decade absence.

Fall Champion of Glenwood Chess Club

Congratulations to Orlan Smith winner of Glenwood Chess Club's Fall Ladder Tournament.

Strong Field at Evanston November Tournament

The Evanston Chess Club November 2 dual-rated tournament had a relatively small turnout of 33, but quite a bit of strength at the top. Clear first place honors in the Gold section went to the new guy in town: Ekin Zeytinoglu, a FIDE-rated college student from Turkey who was playing his very first USCF-rated event and went undefeated for four rounds. Expert David Franklin and Daniel Bronfeyn each had 3 points, and guest master FM Kevin Bachler and NM Ken Wallach each scored 2.5.

Illowa Chess Club's 2013 Fall Classic

Saturday, October 5th, 2013. It's a beautiful day on the beautiful campus of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Ok, maybe it's raining. But every day is a beautiful day when you're at a chess tournament.
