The 2010 World School Individual Chess Championships has been underway for the past 3 days in the beautiful city of Kayseri, Turkey. At this well executed event (more on this later), I have been fulfilling the role of Deputy Chief Arbiter for the Girls U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17 sections. I was invited to this event back in May by the President of the Turkish Chess Federation (TCF), Mr. Ali Nihat Yazici, who is also running a campaign for the post of European Chess Federation President.

Midway Chess Club Sunday Golf Challenge

Written by wshehan
Monday, 26 July 2010 19:20

This weekend was the first of what we hope to be start of a monthly chess event at the University Golf Club in University Park, IL (just south of Park Forest). As usual it had its first tournament issues, late start on the second round, forgotten powercord, confusion on the food and such but overall it went pretty smooth. Some of the things that went right were the pairings up on a big screen so that they were easy to see. In the future board one games and results will be broadcast live on the internet. The food was ordered after round one and was ready on time after round two. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and beverages. I know that my Shrimp Po-Boy was fantastic!

Once we got underway everything settled down and the match ended up with Douglas Middleton with a score of 3.0 and a four-way tie for 2nd with Cima, Reed, Jackson and Armistead all having 2 points each.

Eric Rosen Takes on the Best at the US Junior Closed - IM Sam Shankland takes Title in Tiebreaker

Written by Jon Burgess
Monday, 19 July 2010 19:17
Eric Rosen from Chicago took on some of the best junior players at the US Junior Closed tournament which ended today in St Louis. (Playoffs tomorrow)

Despite being the lowest rated player in the event Eric proved that a low rating doesn't mean you will do badly in a tournament. As Bobby Fischer always said: "Play the board not the man."

The tournament was played over 9 rounds. Eric scored 3 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses to end with 4.5/9 tied for 5th place out of the 10 players.

Bian Family Wins Big in Vegas; Other Illinois Players Also Hit Jackpot

Written by Andi Rosen

Congratulations to Warren Scholars and siblings Victoria and Alex Bian, and their dad Mike, who all took or tied for first place in the sections they played in at the recently finished Las Vegas International Chess Festival.  Mike (Shaogang) scored 5.5/6 points in the U1400 section, winning clear first place and slightly more than $2,000.  Victoria scored 4 out of 5 points in the Susan Polgar World Chess Championship for Girls U14 division, good enough to share in a three-way tie for first place; and Alex, who played in the Susan Polgar World Chess Championship for Boys U11 division, was one of two boys in the section with a perfect score of 5/5. Warren Scholar Shayna Provine also did very well, coming in second in the Girls U11 division with 4/5.

Chicago Industrial Chess League looking for you!

Written by William Shehan
Monday, 17 May 2010 21:27

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN IN THE FUN OF PLAYING TEAM CHESS

The CICL organizes team-chess matches through out the greater Chicago-area, in both the suburbs and downtown. We have 52 years of experience, 300 players on 26 teams (and growing), multiple geographic divisions to minimize travel, and a spot for you. CICL teams represent companies, government agencies, colleges, chess clubs, and other organizations.

What is the CICL? The Chicago Industrial Chess League organizes team-chess matches between downtown Chicago and suburban companies, government agencies, colleges, chess clubs, and other organizations. The League has been in continual existence since 1957, with over 300 players playing on 26 teams -- and is growing. Team size is six players, but eight or more members per team is recommended to assure that a 6-person lineup is fielded for each match. We have multiple geographic divisions, and teams compete only within their division during the regular season. So long distance travel to matches is NOT required. The season begins in September and runs through April, and then the League Championship Playoffs are held in May. Also, we offer some individual tournaments each year, an outstanding monthly newsletter, website, and an awards banquet with GM lecture and blitz tournament.

Web Page and Forum Registration

Written by Tom Sprandel
Monday, 03 August 2009 12:51

Welcome to the newly designed web page. The page is driven by Joomla 1.5, an open source, content management system (CMS). A CMS allows non-programmers to contribute directly to the page. We hope it will allow many kinds of community participation that were impossible before.

Navigation is not fully developed yet, but here are a few hints. The top links are very nearly the same as they were on the old page. Sub menus will appear at the bottom on the left as you click on the various top menu items. The "Main Menu" on the left is where new developments will happen. There are already some new sections, like Youth News and Club News. More will follow.

Create an account on the Web Page. Once you have verified your account, and your account has been approved, it will work for the Forum, too. You need to do this even if you were registered on the old Forum.

Join us on the Forum. Your opinions and comments are welcome.

Sincerely,
Tom Sprandel
President
