Dr G's Hosts First "Chess Plus" Event in Urbana

Dr G's Chess Event, 5/30/15Dr G's first annual Chess Plus Event, held on May 30 at Urbana's Lincoln Square Mall, added up to three-plus hours of chess adventure for more than 20 youngsters, ages 5-12.

Family and friends gathered as the talented youth enjoyed relaxed yet competitive game play and analysis.

Blitz, Speed, Challenge, Puzzles, Demo Debates, Pawns, Knight/Queen -- and Dr G's Treasure Chess (aye, doubloons!) captivated the audience.

Between games our players stepped out to enjoy a few rounds of Leaps & Ledges, Crocodile Hop and Splendor, just a sample of Dr G's extensive cognitive fare.

Was there any serious chess play? Of course! Texts were analyzed, openings evaluated, middle games weighed -- and material value (aye, doubloons!) assessed. A Knight's Tour was mounted. There were corners of quiet play amidst outbreaks of lively exchange.

Professor IM Ian Brooks dropped in to "up the intellect", providing live commentary and post-game discourse.

Our next Chess Plus Event is on June 14th, same squares, 2-4 pm.

After piloting a modestly successful 12-week Scholastic Program for all skill levels -- and now, with Chess Plus under our collective belts -- we're reserving spaces in our summer ChessWorks classes:

  •   July 7-9  & 14-16, 8:30-11am
  •   July 21-23 & 28-30, 8:30-11am

  •   Aug 10-14, 12-4:30 pm

Each two-week class is comprised of 6 sessions for a total of 15 hours of instruction. The August class is a one-week advanced session (5 days, 20 hours total).

Full of learning! We believe in Chess 4 Success, building confidence, character, and community resources.

No one loses.

We assert: "I win, and I learn."

Summer ChessWorks classes are disciplined yet relaxed multi-media workshops in small group configurations. Hands-on learning opportunities will appeal to all personalities.

We're even contructing Dr G's "Build A Board" -- yes -- students will architect and build their own chessboards!
