Glenwood Holds Chess Wars V

On August 9, 2015, The Glenwood Chess Club held Chess Wars V. Three divisions of warriors competed in this event.

In the Ribbons Section, 1709-rated Eric Luster “battered and bullied” his lower ranked opponents! The closest finisher next to him was 1346-rated Matthew Kelly who placed second.

David Harrison took third, Michael Crouse and Christopher Harrison, who drew with Luster in the first round, took the fifth place prize.

In the Trophy Section, young scholastic player, Yashom Kapoor, who had won another tournament the day before with a 4-0 score, repeated the feat and garnishing a well-deserved 1st place trophy.

Michael Ren (3), Yu- Lin Yung (3), Omar Mazjoub (2.5) and Michael’s brother Peter Ren rounded out the other 2nd-5th place winners.

In the Open Division, Douglas Middleton won his first three games and was poised to go undefeated. However, Kubat Gundogdu was not impressed at Doug’s momentum and proceeded to upset him in the final round, for a clear-cut first place win at 3.5 points.

Doug accepted his defeat graciously and shared the 2nd and 3rd place prize money with Tom Bereket, both of whom, had 3 points.

Everyone seemed to have a good time and we had several first-time players at the event.
