Middleton Tops Chess Wars IX

On December 19, Chess Wars IX was held at the Blakey Center in Glenwood. Doug Middleton was the first place winner at 3-0. He defeated his first three opponents, then withdrew, deciding to excuse himself and live to “fight/play chess” another day.
The second place winner was Madison Loftis, who also had with 3 points. Third place went to Sam Henderson via tiebreaks with 2 points.

However, the most impressive player of the day was Joseph Hooks. He began the tournament rated 1194. But, he knocked off two 1500+ rated players and his rating increased to 1327.

In fact, in his final round, Hooks was up by a knight and his opponent, Henderson had only about four minutes on his clock -- before Hooks mistakenly placed his queen directly next to Sam’s rook, quickly resigning thereafter.
Hooks seemed pleased and vowed to return and gain more rating points in future tournaments!
