November 2013 Chess Roundup

There is a lot going on in the world of chess.  For starters, as the world gets set to battle between youth and experience at the World Championship, the next wave of youth is getting ready for the battle down the road as Wei Yi becomes the youngest person to ever become a grandmaster.  The 51st National Challengers Chess Championship 2013 in India had IM Thejkumar and IM Ashwin Jayaram tied for first.  Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo won the Women's Section of the European Club Cup which is her fifth title for this tournament.  After starting in Bastia, the 17th Corsica Masters moved on to Aiacciu, and in the end GM Ivan Saric won.  IM Jahongir Vakhidov not only won the 3rd Central Asia Cup but also achieved a GM norm.  Over in St. Louis, IM Kayden Troff tied for first at the SPICE Cup Open and achieved his second GM norm.  GM Alexey Dreev won the Indonesian Open Chess Championship 2013, and Fabiano Caruana secured victory in Bucharest at the 7th edition of Kings Tournament.

Closer to home in Illinois, here are the results at local tournaments: 

September 13 to October 4:  The ChessIQ Game-90 Fall I Tournament in Skokie, IL had 12 players.  After four rounds, Akhil Kalghatgi and Rishi Narayanan tied for first with 3 points.  Crosstables.

October 5: The Illowa Fall Classic in Moline, IL had 19 players in two sections.  In the Open Section, Luis Peralta took first with 3.5 out of 4 points.  In the U1400 Section, Edward Reedy finished in first but lost 3 rating points after drawing Stan Felgar in the third round.  Crosstables.

October 5:  The Orland Park October 2013 Tournament had 21 players and two sections.  In the U100 Section, Maxwell Wolf finished first and gained 156 points.  In the U500 Section, Andrew Mostert won his first five games of rated play and took first place and received a provisional rating of 966.   Crosstables.

October 5: The October Game-45 Tournament in Skokie, IL had two sections and 19 players.  In the Open Section, Gregory Bungo took first place.  In the U1500 Section, Wesley Lai swept all four rounds.  Crosstables.

October 6: The 94th Knights Quest in Northbrook, IL had 64 players.  In the Open Section, Jacob Furfine and Tom Bareket tied for first with 3/4 points.  In the U1400 Section, Kevin HO and Adam Rubinberg tied for first.  In the U1000 Section, Pradeep Senthill finished undefeated.  In the U600 Section, Krish Sharma gained 195 points and going undefeated.  Crosstables.

August 1 to October 8:  The Glenwood Club Championship 2013 had 23 players participating.  Joe Emole and Geber Bugia tied for first with 6.0 out of 7.0.  Crosstable.

October 8:  The October Quads in Moline, IL had four sections and 16 players.  The Top Quad had Ben Wolf finishing undefeated.  In the 2nd Quad, Benjamin Nordick, Marcus Wilson, and Roger Kromphardt tied for first with 2.0 out of 3.0 points.  In the 3rd Quad, Robert Killian went undefeated.  In the fourth Quad, George Meister won three out of three.  Crosstables.

October 12:  The SBB Research Group Open Tournament in Northbrook, IL had 56 players and 4 Sections.  In the 9-12 / 7-8 Section, Rahul Dhiman went undefeated.  In the 5-6 Section, Jacob Furfine finished in first with 4.5 out of 5.0 points.  In the 3-4 Section, Aditya Pillai finished in first and gained 147 points.  In the K-2 Section, Dimitar Mardov and Zalan Gyorgy tied for first with 4.0 points.  Crosstables.

October 12:  The National Chess Day Tournament in Park Forest had 18 players.  Joe Emole won all four rounds in this G/40 event.  Crosstable.

October 11 to 13: The 22nd Midwest Class Championship in Wheeling, IL  had 243 players and seven sections.   In the Master Section, there was a four-way tie for first between GM Yury Shulman, GM Nikola Mitkov, GM Dmitry Gurevich, and GM Mesgen Amanov.  In the Expert Section, Robert Keating drew Gregory Bungo in the fifth round to take first and left Gregory in a three-way tie for second.  Had Gregory Bungo won the roles would have been reversed. Joshua Alexander went undefeated in the Class A Section, and Andrew Fei accomplished the same feat in the Class B section.  In the Class C Section, without playing each other, Matthew Klosinski and and Jonathan Lee tied for first.  In the Class D Section, Kurt Bendoraitis went 5/5 for increased his provisional rating 149 points.  In the Class E Section, Weisong XU won all five rounds and finished with a 1325 provisional rating.  Crosstables

October 15:  The October 2013 Blitz in Moline, IL had 16 players.  In 14 rounds, Ben Wolf lost only 1 game.  His provisional rating jumped 492 points to 2144.  Crosstable.

October 19: The '13 Northern IL Fall Classic Tournament in Lisle, IL had three sections and 31 players.  In the Open Section, Mark Robledo, Jr. and Jon Winick drew each other in the fourth round to tie for first. In the Reserve Section, Gamaliel de Luna Gamalied De Luna won all four rounds.  In the Booster Section, Matthias Guillet played his first four games of rated play and won them all.  Finished with a rating of 1621.  Crosstables.

October 19:  The Peoria Academy Fall Scholastic 2013 Tournament in Peoria, IL had 20 players.  In the Polgar Section three players (Joshua Madsen, Edward Zhang, and Adrian Zanoria) tied for first.  In the Tal Section, Alan Feng won all four rounds.  Crosstables

October 19: The ChessIQ October Game 60 Tournament in Skokie, IL had two sections and 26 players.  In the Open Section, Gregory Bungo and Dusan Tutush tied for first with 3.5/4.0.  In the U1500 Section, Billy Hoseman won first with 3.5 points.  Crosstables.

October 22: The Illowa October G20 Swiss Tournament in Moline, IL had 12 players.  Ben Wolf was the sole player to go 3/3.  Crosstable.

October 25:  The NYCC 2013 1025 Tournament in Naperville, IL had 20 players.  In the U1400 Section, Matthew Tang, Charles Chen, and David Chu all tied for first with 1.5/2.0.  In the U800 Section, David He went 3 for 3.  Kevin Song also went 3 for 3 in the U600 Section.  Crosstables.

October 26:  The 60th Kumbaya Tournament in Skokie, IL had 34 players.  In the 1200 Plus Section, David Vogel was undefeated.  In the U1200 Section, Howard Dai went 3.5/4.0, and in the U700 Section, Jackie Christiansen went undefeated.  Crosstables

October 27:  The Illini Scholastic Tournament in Champaign, IL had 31 players in two of their Sections.  In the U900 Section, Peter Zheng went 4.5/5.0 to take first.  In the Open Section, Vladimir Koveshikov finished first with 2.5/3.0.  Crosstables

October 27:  The Illini Scholastic also had the U14 Section.  7 players participated in this event.  Jai Mahajan came in first with 6.5/7.0 points.  Crosstable.

October 7 to 28:   The Untournament in Peoria, IL had 15 players participating.  Ronald Suarez ended up tying for first with Daniel Garrett after losing to Michael Leali in the fourth round.  Crosstable.

October 29: The Illowa October Hippopotamus Themed Tournament had 10 players in Moline, IL.  In the Theme Section, Ben Wolf won all three rounds.  In the Reserve Section, there was a tie for first between Christina Nordick and Bharath Banothu.  Crosstables.
