October Chess Roundup

Lot going on in the wide world of chess this past month. Fabiano Caruana won first half of Grand Slam in San Paulo. Humpy Knoeru won the FIDE Women's Grand Prix. The 40th Chess Olympiad concluded in Istanbul with Armenian finishing first. The FIDE Congress met with a couple articles (I & II) on USCF site plus an overall look at the topics covered.

But what about in the Land of Lincoln? Here's the highlights from Illinois tournaments durning the past month.

September 1: Labor Day Scholastic 2012 Tournament in Oakbrook drew 68 players for this two section event. Clear winners were had in both sections: Allan Lopez in the U12 Section and Jonathan Xu in the U7 Section. Crosstables.

Glenwood Chess Club September Open

The Glenwood Chess Club September Open was held on 9/29/12 at the Blakey Center in Glenwood and drew 18 players. Congratulations to Sedrick Prude and William Blackman who both tied for 1st place in the open section.

The under 1700 prize went to Joe Fennessey.

49th Bradley Summer Open

The 49th Bradley Summer Open was held at the Bradley Student Union Center Augsut 25th.  It was won by Nikhilesh Kunche with a score of 4 points for the third year in a row.  Nikhilesh is a Bradley Alum so somehow that seems fitting.  Henry Mattison and Pete Karagianis both tied for second with scores of 3-1/2.

There was a total of 32 players which is about average for the BSO.

Chess RoundupThe world of chess is a big one. In the month of August there was the start of the 40th Fide Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey where one of the stories from it is to see if Medina Aulia, 14, from Indonisia will become one of her country's youngest Women's Grandmaster. There was a five way tie at Open International de Sants for first. Gata Kamsky won the Washington International. Three top French players were suspended for cheating. And the first feature documentary "Algorithms", on blind chess, is finished.
