Welcome Edwin Walker, new WJS-RS Director

The Illinois Chess Association would like to welcome Edwin Walker as our new director of the Warren Junior Scholars program. Edwin is well known to many people in the Illinois chess community and someone I consider a friend. I am confident that he will do a remarkable job with the Warren Junior Scholars and Rising Stars scholastic programs. I would also like to thank Eric Luster, the outgoing chairman of our program, for his years of dedicated service. He has graciously offered to assist Edwin during this transition period.

Please join me in welcoming Edwin to his new position.

2022-2023 Class of Warren Junior Scholars and Rising Stars

The Illinois Chess Association is proud to announce the 2022-2023 class of Warren Junior Scholars and Rising Stars.

The Warren Junior Scholar program was started over 30 years ago by Helen Warren, a former ICA president, to recognize the most accomplished and promising scholastic chess players in the state. In 2015, the Rising Stars program was added to recognize the next tier of up-and-coming scholastic players. Together, these two programs recognize the top scholastic chess talent in our state. Invitation to these programs is based on USCF chess ratings and active participation in chess tournaments.

In addition to providing recognition to these players, the purpose of the program is to nurture the highest-potential scholastic chess players so that they may compete on the national and international stage, and to provide students with an opportunity for rigorous study that will give them the skills to become leaders in other fields as adults.
