George Orwell Memorial Open II
AKA: DeKalb Spring 2012 Challenge II
Description: Competitive chess in a comfortable environment, featuring relaxed time controls and a generous prize fund. DeKalb Chess Club is reprising the successful event which premiered last year. Eric Blair (aka George Orwell) would have turned 109 this week (born 6/26/1903). He reportedly enjoyed playing chess at one of his first jobs, clerking at a British bookstore.
Venue: First Congregational Church, 615 N First Street, DeKalb, IL
Format: Four rounds, USCF-rated, Swiss Pairing. Three Sections are planned: Open, Under 1600, Under 1200.
Sections and pairing system may be changed at TD Discretion based upon registrations.
Time Controls: Game/60 + 5 second delay, all sections.
Entry Fee: $15 with pre-registration email, $20 at the door.
$5 discount for second and subsequent family members and subsequent members of the same scholastic team.
Prizes: Cash prizes depending upon entrants. Minimum of 67% distribution guaranteed, past events have generally returned 80% in prize money. See schedule at site. Distribution typically includes Class B (1799-1600) and Class D (1399-1200) prizes as well as section awards. Unrated players are eligible for section prizes only.
Reg: 8:15am-8:50am
Tournament Rounds: 9am, 11:10am, 1:40pm, 3:50pm (ending by 6:00pm)
Lunch: Food will be ordered after Round One to be delivered between Rounds 2 and 3. See TD for menus. Refrigerators and microwaves available on-site.
