Rockford's Jeremiah Davis has won the K-12 Open section of the Ice Harbor Scholastic competed April 30 in Dubuque, IA.

In its fifth year, Ice Harbor has become the de facto midwest youth championship with competitors from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Davis, a Rockford Marshall 8th-grader who participates in the ICA's Rising Stars Program, was 4-1 in the section, losing only to Iowa's Barry Vigil who took second place on tiebreaks. Davis upped his rating 75 points to 1638. Jeremiah's father credits the Sunday event Rising Stars training sessions for sparking his son's recent improvement.

Jeremiah also took second place in the K-12 blitz tournament held April 28.

Elijah Patterson, also from Rockford, finished a half-point back in the K-12 with 3.5, tying for third place out of 30 competitors.

Kamalesh Sureshkumar took second place in the K-6 Open, losing to champion Hersh Singh of Wisconsin in the final round to finish with 3.5. Kamalesh had the highest tiebreaks in the four-player score group to nab the impressive second place hardware.

Coupled with his father Suresh Rajamani, the Rockford duo won one of the Ice Harbor parent-child awards as did Glenn and Gabe Panner. Suresh won the rated Friends & Family side event while Glenn coasted to victory in the Non-Rated Friends & Family.

Abigail Grandy posted 4.5/6 in the K-6 Under 800 section as did Gannon Bates, both tying for third place. Abigail raised her rating 125 points while Gannon's went up 164.

Catherine Liu tied for fifth place in the K-3 Open section while her brother David won the section's Top U800 prize. Together they won a Top Team plaque for their Bloomington-Normal area school.

Kevin Ho was Illinois' lone entrant in the Masters / Experts section, posting a win and a draw against higher rated opponents.

19 players from Illinois competed. Next year's event has already been scheduled: May 18-20, 2018.
