Whitney Young High School, the prestigious Chicago public high school that boasts First Lady Michelle Obama and Matrix creators Andy and Larry Wachowski among its many notable alumni, is set to host the 2010 Illinois All-Grade Championship on November 13th, 2010. The three organizers are Chess Education Partners, with a wealth of big tournament experience; Whitney Young, one of the state's top high school chess programs; and the Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago, a leader in organizing free scholastic tournaments. They have pulled out all the stops to ensure a successful tournament with some unique features.

To make this event available for everyone, including city students who have been previously unable to enter or travel to either of the state scholastic championships, the organizers have made 300 free entries available to those in the Illinois free or reduced lunch program. Additionally, for students not currently USCF members, organizers are raising funds to pay for $7 junior tournament memberships for this event. The All-Grade is comprised of 13 separate sections, one for each grade from K to 12, and features an impressive commitment of 186 trophies; 130 of which will be awarded to individuals, with 56 more to top teams.

Whitney Young is centrally located in downtown Chicago, easily accessible by major highways and public transportation. Additionally, organizers have addressed parking concerns with 500 available free spots, and an additional 500+ spots available if necessary.

Chicago has thrown down the gauntlet to its suburban and downstate neighbors! City coaches are determined to demonstrate how chess can thrive in an urban environment. The All-Grade promises to highlight the best that scholastic chess has to offer by bringing together students from a diverse array of backgrounds and geography in a competitive but friendly environment.

Registration is online only at www.chessteachers.org, with a discounted early entry fee of $25.00 expiring on October 31st. See that website or the listing on our Events page (Events>Tournaments>Scholastic) for additional details.
