Playing Site and Room Bookings
Chicago2875 Hotel, Northbrook. Formerly Crowne Plaza Chicago-Northbrook, in process of changing to Marriott Delta. 2875 North Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook, Illinois 60062. Newly renovated. Hotel phone for accommodation bookings 847-298-2525. Mention Labor Day CHESS. $99 single rate. Includes outdoor pool and exercise center. During the transition, this is the only way to book a room with the hotel. They will not write down credit card numbers in advance, and so request that if you cancel, you be kind to them and your fellow chess players by calling at least 24 hours in advance and letting them know you are canceling.
Sections
Open (open to all) and Reserve (Under 1800 or unrated). Both sections FIDE Rated - FIDE Laws of Chess will be followed. Only FIDE games allowable time controls will rated by FIDE September 2021 rating supplement will be used.
Round Schedule and Time Limits
- 4-day option — 9/3-6, Rounds 1-7, G/90+30, Fri: 7:00; Sat 10:00, 3:30; Sun 9:00, 2:30; Mon 9:00, 2:30
- 3-day option — 9/4-6, Rounds 1-2, G/60,d5, then merge with 4-day at round 3: RNDS: Sat 10:00, 1:00; MERGE: Rounds 3-7 G/90+30, Sat: 3:30;Sun 9:00, 2:30; Mon 9:00, 2:30
- 2-day option — 9/5-6, Rounds 1-4, G/30 d5, then merge with 3-day at rd 5. Sun. 9:00, 10:15, 11:30, 1:00 and MERGE 2:30., Mon. 10:00 a.m. & 3:30 p.m.
Byes: Up to two 1/2-point byes available to be used in any round, must commit by end of round 2. No byes may be rescinded after round 2.
Prizes: $10,500 unconditionally guaranteed!
- Open Section: Overall: $1,500-1,000-500-300-200; Under 2400: $500-250-150; Under 2200: $500-250-150; Under 2000: $400-200-150
- Reserve (Under 1800) Section: Overall:$1,000-500-250-150-100; Under 1600 $350- 200-100; Under 1400 $350-200-100; Under 1200 $350-200-100.
- Unrated players qualify for top prizes only, not for class prizes.
- Cash Prize Distribution: All cash prizes - be they overall prizes, place prizes, section prizes or any other type of cash prize, are processed and paid digitally within 8 business days of the tournament end. Refunds for withdrawals are processed within 10 business days of the tournament's end.

Entry Fee

- $125 online after 9:00 p.m. 8/14 and before 9:00 p.m 8/27
- $150 online after 9:00 p.m 8/27 until 9/3 5:30 p.m.
- $160 thereafter online or at the site
- Registration and check-in 4Day: Fri 9/3: 5:30-6:30; 3Day: Sat 9/4: 8:30-9:30 a.m.; 2Day: Sun 9/5: 7:30-8:30 a.m.
- Entries after cutoff receive ½-point byes for round 1 and if needed for round 2.
- Reentries for $60 to appropriate section with appropriate byes if needed.
- $40 extra to play in Open Section with a rating of 1799 and below.
- $5 discount for ICA members who join ICA by 8/31/2021 (annual dues $15 regular, $10 scholastic— join at www.il-chess.org). Enter normally, receive a $5 rebate at the tournament. Rebates processed during the event.

Chess Equipment

Bring your own chess clock.
Players who do not know how to properly set or add time to their chess clock may be subject to penalties at director discretion. (Examples: Not being able to use the clock, not receiving time bonuses when the opponent is penalized, etc.) See Setting-the-popular-digital-clocks-for-G90inc30.pdf (pdxchess.org)
Be sure to know if your clock adds, or does not add, 30 seconds before the first move. If it does not, set your base time for 90 minutes, 30 seconds.
COVID and Other Special Rules
Due to the recent CDC and Governor orders, all players should expect to wear masks during the event. If positivity rates get higher, we may add clear dividers to the boards and use HOCL foggers between rounds. If things improve we will be as vaccine-friendly as the state allows, for example, earlier this year we were mask optional for vaccinated participants.
