U.S. Chess K-12 Championship

Championship Section

The 2019 K-12 Championships were held in Schaumburg IL over the weekend of March 15-17th in Schaumburg IL. Illinois was well represented with David Peng of New Trier High School and Matthew Stevens of Whitney Young of Chicago finishing in a 3 way tie for first scoring 6.5 points each. Nicholas Checa of New York finished first based on tiebreaks,Peng was awarded second place on tiebreaks and Stevens placed third

. Other Illinois players in the top 25 include:

Dimitar Mardov, Anne Sullivan Elementary with 5.5 who finished in 11th place and Miranda Liu of Stevenson High School and

()Nikhil Kalchatgi,Whitney Young High School.tied for 25th place with 5 points..

Unrated (Championship Section)

Raman Manandhar of Maine South placed first on tiebreak with 2 points, with Adam Lee Walker of Fremd, finishing second with 2 points, also on tiebreak and Vasilious Loutrianakis of Maine South finishing third with 1.5 points.

1900-1999 

In the 1900-1999 section,Illinois placed 1-2-3 with Henry Joseph Curcio of Maine South finishing first with 5 points and

Si R Li of New Trier. High School finishing tied for second and third with Aria Hosley of Whitney Young High School with 4.5 points, Li was awarded 2nd on tiebreak

and Si R Li of New Trier. High School finishing tied for second and third with Aria Hosley of Whitney Young High School with 4.5 points, Li was awarded 2nd on tiebreak.

U-1900

Ashley Mei Yan of Stevenson High School finished 3rd with 6 points on tiebreak.

U-1600

Francis Michael Sheehy of Glenbard West High School and Siv Muthupalaniappan of Glenbrook North High School tied for first with 6.5 points with first place being awarded to Francis Michael Sheehy on tiebreak

 U-1200

Adam Chapparo of Niles North scored 6.5 points and was awarded third place on tiebreak

 U-800

William Quinn of Mount Carmel High School scored 7 points and was awarded first place. Miguel Hernandez of Mount Carmel High School finished with 6.5 points and was awarded second place on tiebreak. James D. Ahern of Nichols Middle School in Evanston was awarded 3rd place on tiebreak.

Unrated

Jack Hensen of Stillman Valley High School placed first with 6.5 points. Matthew Daniel Bak of Glenbard West High School finished second on tiebreak and Josiah Schmitt of Sterling High School finished third, also on tiebreak.

March Top 100 Lists for Girls with 3 New Names

 

Three new girls from Illinois made the Top 100 lists compiled by US Chess this month: Ashvika Lokesh, age 7 with a rating of 528; Devanshi Kothari, age 14 with a rating of 1084; and Bernadette Schwegel, age 15 with a rating of 872. Well done!

There were also three female players who managed to add more than 100 points to their rating over last month: Louisa Zhang, who went from 1210 (rank 78) to 1391 (rank 52); Sukhi Doddi, who was 767 (rank 66) and now boasts a rating of 878 (rank 49); and Anujin Namuunbayar, whose rating jumped from 1126 (rank 90) to 1241 (rank 69). Four Experts in the February Top 100 Lists for Girls

 

Congratulations to Whitney Young freshman Aria Hoesley who made expert with her outstanding performance at the Tim Just Winter Open! The other three girls from Illinois with a USCF rating above 2000 are Shreya Mangalam (rated 2137), Marissa Li (rated 2061), and Miranda Liu (rated 2020).

There were big rating increases in the lower age categories. Just to name a few:

  • 6-year old Olivia Lee went from a rating of 486 (rank 92) to 621 (rank 60).
  • Mehak Jiandani increased her rating by 217 points to a new high of 827.

50 Girls from IL in January 2019 Top 100 Lists

The new set of lists published by US Chess features exactly 50 female players from the State of Lincoln, ranging from a rating of 486 by 6-year old Olivia Lee to 2137 by 15-year old expert Shreya Mangalam.

Three girls—Ankaa Gantulga, Anujin Namuunbayar and Stella Pashyan—had temporarily dropped off the lists but have recently improved substantially to make the cut again.

Sixth-grader Shakira Luster from St. Ethelreda in Chicago made her first appearance on the list. Well done, Shakira!
