Updated: Oct. '17: 9 IL Girls in Top 20 By Age; 46 in Top 100's

 

The US Chess Top 100 lists for October include 46 young ladies from Illinois with nine of them ranking in the top 20.

In the “Ages 7 and Under” group, Nandini Prakash and Hili Bareket improved their ratings over last month; the same is true for Linda Pham and Enkhjin Namuunbayar, who are a year older.

With her new rating of 1080, Linda secured herself a top-25 spot among the nation's 8-year old females.

Girls Top 2 of 3 Sections at October 14 Bateman Invitational

 

With 90 players competing, the Chicago Chess Foundation's 2017-2018 season got off to a rollicking start at an October 14 invitational tournament at the northside Newton Bateman Elementary School.

Ultimately more than 45 school- and club-based teams will be going at it when the CCF competition schedule kicks off in November.

In the Novice K-4 section, Skinner North's Elaine Chao and Decatur's Lily Meegoda were both perfect with 5-for-5 efforts. Elaine won a blitz tiebreaker to take first place honors.

WCM Jacob Furfine Ties For 6th Place at 2017 World Youth in Under 16's in Uruguay; Aydin Turgut Ties for 9th in U14's

 

With an 11th round victory over India's Sarkar Rajdeep, Jacob Furfine secured a sixth-place tie in the Under 16 section at the 2017 World Youth.

The competition concluded September 26 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

At 7.5/11, Furfine was only a point back from the three-way co-champions who posted 8.5's.

Fellow Illinoisian Aydin Turgut posted 7.0/11 in the Under 14's, finishing in a ten-way tie for 9th place.

In the Under 14 Girls, Shreya Mangalam tied for 14th place with four others thanks to her 6.5/11 score. Aria Hoesley was only a point back with 5.5, tying for 27th out of more than 50 entries. WCM Marissa Li also posted 5.5 in the U16, tying for 25th place out of 60 entrants.

Update: Illinois With Three Players on Top 6 Boards at Uruguay World Youth Heading into 11th and Final Round

 

ILTEAMFive Illinois juniors are among the 28 Americans competing at the 2017 World Youth Chess competion in Montevideo, Uruguay underway the last week of September.

Hurricane Irma has prevented one player from competing but, thankfully, the Illinois team has arrived safely in South America.

September 2017: 47 Illinois Girls in Top 100's, 10 in Top 20

 

Despite tournament activity, Illinois girls in the lower age groups did not see big shifts in their US chess ranking over the last month.

Josephine Swan from Chicago made the top 100 list for 9 year olds for the first time with a rating of 941. Way to go, Josephine!

With her four draws against higher-rated players in the Cleveland Open last month, Shreya Mangalam managed to gain almost 20 rating points and now ranks 4th in the country for girls aged 14.

Miranda Liu has also moved up — from age 15 to age 16. Happy Birthday, Miranda! While she has not played since April, she improved her US ranking by two spots (from 7th place to 5th place).
